My Friday the Thirteenth
1:01:00 AMLast night, I exited Bogart's, a popular music venue in Cincinnati, OH. I had just watched one of my favorite bands kick ass for the second year in a row. The fall air was a bitter cold, yet I didn't feel a single shiver run through my body, as I was running off the heat and energy I had just witnessed.

New Politics is pop punk band from Denmark that formed over five years ago. The month their first
album was released, my sister gave me a copy, and I fell in love. Last summer, I had the honor of seeing them perform at Bunbury Music Festival. It had been a dream come true. And, tonight I saw them, again.
The entire day leading up to the show was a blur. I couldn't concentrate on my Italian quiz this morning, because I was so excited. When my friends and I arrived at the venue, that excitement sky rocketed. I hadn't seen this band play in over a year, and finally the night had come.
The opening acts were LOLO and The Griswolds, both performers that I was familiar with. My sister and I saw The Griswolds open for Walk the Moon earlier this year at the same venue. They were amazing in April, and they brought that same intense energy this time around, as well. LOLO is a singer (her real name is Lauren Pritchard) whose career I have been following for awhile. I became a fan of Lauren back before she had taken on her moniker and was performing in the Broadway musical, Spring Awakening. I had the pleasure of seeing her perform with Fall Out Boy in 2014, and it was amazing. I was thrilled to finally see her perform her own music, which consists of powerful earthshaking, soul-rock tunes.
Okay, back to New Politics. The band released a new album (Vikings) just a few months before, so they played a handful of songs off the album, as well as a few from past albums. My favorite performances were "Everywhere I Go (Kings and Queens)," "Just Like Me," and "Yeah Yeah Yeah." But, of course, every song was great. Lou is an awe-inspiring drummer, Soren's musicality is hard to beat, and David's vocals and dance skills will make your jaw drop.
The most memorable moment of the show for me was a bit of a freak accident (It was Friday the 13th, after all). During the song "Fall Into These Arms," David climbed into the crowd. Audience members held him up by his feet, similarly to a cheer pyramid. I happened to be right in front of David, as he stood atop the crowd. Near the end of the song, he dropped down on his back to crowd surf back to the stage. Everyone in the crowd was squished tightly together. The girl beside me and I both had David's shoulders in hand, as we helped send him back to the front. Because of the close proximity, her arm rubbed harshly against my face, more specifically my eye. This caused my contact lens to fall out. (I KNOW, RIGHT?!) Luckily, I was able to catch the damn thing with my other hand. The next song was a ballad, so thankfully no one was jumping around as I dug through my bag for my eye drops, and hastily put my contact back in. It was a wild night, haha. I will certainly never forget that moment.
Despite the momentary blindness in my right eye, I had an incredible night. New Politics shook the house. I sang along with every song, and danced through every set. I dearly hope I get the chance to see them perform again soon.
